The Week Magazine ran with this image as their cover sketch. Just so it is said, clearly and unambiguously: the Tsarnaev brothers are white guys. They are white. The FBI’s own wanted poster for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev lists his race as “white”, but you would never know it from the cover image on The Week. Hold up the cover to someone else, and ask them how many white people they can see on the cover. Chances are they will identify Gabby Giffords on the top left and the image of the Boston policemen (all white men) on the top right, but how about those two guys in the center? Nope, not a chance that anyone would say these caricatures look white. Why? Because in addition to being white they are also “Muslim”, which is the current dehumanizing “Other” that whiteness has constructed as a sanctioned target for violence in US popular culture. This is how white privilege works in media representations and everyday life: when the criminal suspects are demonstrably white men, seize upon any aspect of difference and magnify it such that they become Othered, non-white, and menacing. If it is too hard to do so, simply dismiss them as aberrations and isolated cases of insanity. This is also how white culture, specifically the process of whiteness in conjunction with white privilege, portrays several non-white identities, including those that are now considered white but at one time were decidedly not so. For example, see here for how the Irish were depicted as violent apes or lazy drunks in the late 1800s to early 1900s. === how the media creates perceptions of race and “whiteness.” also, i wouldn’t necessarily say that “white privilege” changed the appearance of the Tsarnaev brothers, but rather simply white racism.

Skylar White Rant

Lots of re-blogging of Breaking Bad because I’m watching it now and I’m obsessed. 

Also, people that hate Skylar  for being a “bitch” are idiots. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be upset with your husband for lying to you, having a second secret phone, cooking meth, murdering people, missing the birth of your daughter and all the ultrasounds, trying to make you into a bad guy, forcing you to stay with him, putting you and your entire family in danger of either being killed or arrested, treating you like you’re an idiot, being insensitive, selfish, power-hungry, scary, and lots of other adjectives. I could go on. Sure, maybe she’s isn’t the sweetest, most likable character, but how can you justify calling her unreasonable or a bitch?

And that’s another thing… So horrified and tired of seeing all these tumblr posts calling her a bitch or a cunt. Misogynist/sexist much? She’s a bitch for being rational and having a moral compass? People that think Walt is badass and the best character seriously need to stfu. Like… If you think that cooking meth and murdering people and lying to everyone you love is cool then you should probably be psychologically examined. You don’t have to like Skylar, but I think calling her a bitch is a little unjustified; any normal person would be reacting the same way she is. And I bet if the roles were reversed people would still be calling her those names. And I bet if Walt had an affair, everyone would think he’s badass or applaud him for “getting it” or something. Double standards, man… Pissing me off. 

If you’re going to hate her, hate her for legitimate reasons rather than just “she’s a bitch” or “she had an affair.” Wow, she had an affair? When her husband is off murdering people and making/selling drugs? What a terrible person she is! And I’m in no way condoning cheating on people, but the same people that hate her because of that, think Walt’s a badass for doing lots of terrible things.

Also, if you’re other logic is that she doesn’t appreciate Walt’s sacrifice, I think we can all agree that Walt is beyond just doing what he does for his family. It is very clear that he likes being powerful and intimidating.

Just curiously I browsed the Skylar White tag on Tumblr, and Jesus Christ, the shit people say about her is fucking ridiculous. I may be upset over a fictional character, but I feel like it goes deeper than that to a level of crazy misogyny and trying to place blame on someone. She’s just a “dumb bitch” who “doesn’t appreciate Walt’s sacrifice”. Are you kidding me?
